NL Hold'em tips for beginners I. – First steps, practical guideline
Author: SI2008. 01. 21 21:20
We would like to guide the beginner players in the articles of NL Hold’em tips for beginners I. and II. In the first part we provide some basic practical guideline, while in the second part we deal with some game technique questions. We can sample the flavor of the game according to this, but to achieve long-term and remarkable success we need to make further efforts.

Let’s start with the theory. First of all is very important to read articles about the game technique as many as possible. We can even start by reading a poker book. Players regularly analyze their hands in strategy topics in the poker forums, the information that you can get from here is practically invaluable.

It is worth beginning with the smallest stake as possible, for example 0,1$/0,25$ blind can mean a good starting point.  We can even try to play money tables for a short time, because we do not risk anything here. On the other hand obviously the achieved success here does not count. At the beginning let’s start at one table and as we accustomed to it, we can increase the number of tables up to even four tables.

When we start winning the primary purpose should be to build up our bankroll. This is a general principal; who wants to win lots of money mustn’t spend the poker money. Really big amount of money can be made at higher stake, to do so is essential to build up bankroll that enables to change the stake. You can read some more information about this in the Bankroll management article. The only investment that can be the reason for the temporary withdrawal is buying a big high-resolution TFT monitor, which allows to play comfortably at many tables simultaneously.

No Limit Hold’em game is accompanied by significant fluctuation, volatility. It can happen that it goes very well for a while and then inconceivably we have bad beats one after another; we can lose even 5-10 buy-in in a row. This is part of the game; we can say it is standard, so it is not a rare thing. It is important to acknowledge that we are not victims of cheating; simply we can have a losing session. Do not compensate, do not play against the chances of math or logic, saying that we’ve had bad luck so far, but now we will have luck. Do not try to win back everything within 1-2 hands in a short time. Be disciplined and do your best when you play.

It is also worth considering a few-hour, or even a few-day break Meanwhile we can think objectively about how big part  we can blame on the bad run of cards or our bad play. We can analyze our hands with the help of Poker Tracker program. You can find detailed guide about the use of Poker Tracker among the poker articles. We can discuss parties in the Forum, in which you are uncertain.

If the game does not go well after that or we lose more than 10 buy-in, by all means we should go for a smaller stake, or we should have a longer break, when we can spend more time on studying and reading books about poker.
