NL Hold'em tips for beginners II. – Game technique basics
Author: SI2008. 01. 22 08:22
We look through some main game techniques of No-limit Hold’em in this article. The aim is to give some basic advice about techniques for beginner players.

Play only the premium hands:
At the first stage, until we get to know the dynamic of the game and we have little experience or we are not familiar with the traps of the game worth playing tight. Let’s try playing the premium hands only so we can avoid lots of difficult situations. Later, when we have more experience, in order to achieve the optimal or maximal profit obviously it is necessary to increase the number of played hands. However, at first we have exactly the opposite effect with this approach. You can read more about the starting hand strategy in the Starting hand strategy article.

Be aggressive, apply the continuation bet, but do not take big risks:
Another advice, that you should intent to have more aggressive game from the beginning, but you shouldn’t make big bluffs, or if your opponent seems to have strength fold your hand. If you raise preflop with AK, and postflop you have only one opponent left, try to raise again without taking the flop into account, but if you get a call you should give up at the turn or at the river.

Drawing hands:
At higher stake against better opponents it is better to play aggressively, while at lower stake the passive style is more suitable at the beginning. If someone else doesn’t raise, you shouldn’t do either, if someone else raises/calls a bet, you should continue playing only if you have pot odds. At low stake your opponents tend to pay you, if you get the expected hand, so you can increase the profit in this way as well, though this can’t be counted as an optimal profit. Until you are inexperienced aggressive playing of those hands has rather profit decreasing effect.

Obviously at short handed poker game after you raise preflop with  AK let’s take a  3T 8 type flop, it is essential to raise in case of one opponent. In case your opponent raises and he has less than 1 buy in, you should reraise .Your winning chances are high, against a pair or weaker hands, particularly if we take into account that your opponent can fold also. Moreover, if he has better hand we can be lucky to hit the flush. At the early stage you should play more passive if the hand is weaker than this, or when we have more opponents. Without nut flush draw hand and experience you shouldn’t start a “reraiseing war.”

Focus on the game and play Tight-Aggressive (TAG) and leave trying Loose-Aggressive (LAG) game later. It is important to know TAG game is much easier to study and it is more comfortable to play. In short term it means lower volatility also. This can’t be emphasized enough at the beginning, as we mentioned already at the practical guide - you can get losing sessions too. It is difficult to get used to it, so you shouldn’t make it worse with greater fluctuation that the consequence of LAG style.

Stay in the game only with good hands if your opponent shows strength
The more experience you have, the easier you distinguish between the situations when your opponent raise with a monster hand and when there is a good chance that your opponent bluffs or semi-bluffs due to the flop texture. But this rarely happen at lower stakes, and it is difficult to recognize those at first, it is definitely advisable fold your marginal hands.

For instance if we play full ring and we raise preflop with  Jand after 2T5 flop for our  continuation bet our opponent check raise there is a chance that he has big hand. In this case fold your hand automatically unless a short stake opponent raised. If many players see the flop, the chance increasing that flop will hit someone. Don’t let a high pair fascinate you postflop, if the money starts to go in it’s likely that our opponent have better hand, for example a set.

The game style described in this article is based on simplicity, so with this we miss the opportunity of maximal profit. On the other hand as we stated before, without experience you shouldn’t complicate your game, because this doesn’t lead you toward maximizing only backwards.
